However, the piano can produce two or more simultaneous voices at the extremes of its range using stan- dard technique. Thus the twó-hand touch téchnique was developed partiaIly to emulate thé right and Ieft hand of á pianist. The tuning óf the guitar wás altered to providé an extended Iow range in ordér to facilitate báss voices more éffec- tively. The result is an overall method for playing the guitar which provides the ability to effectively perform coun- terpoint, melody, chord andor bass accompaniment with an extended range of the guitar that is fully utilisable. The title óf this thésis is: Expanding thé role of thé jazz guitar. Lower-set fifths tuning is an original title given to the tuning I developed as part of this research. The tun- ing is as follows: This tuning is also known as dropped C t uning, however I use the term lower-set fifths to highlight the fact that the lowest three strings are consecutive fifths apart. Two-hand touch technique describes the technique of tapping a fret in order to produce a sound, which can be done with both hands simultaneously as it does not require any strumming or picking. V oices in the context of this research means any monophonic (melody) or polyphonic (chord) voice played on the guitar.
